Setting Goals

In my life outside of trying to exercise, lose weight, be a great mom to 3 busy boys and also try to be a good, supportive wife, I also work full time. I am a sales manager. On Monday I did my Goal Setting seminar for my reps and thought it definitely applies to what we’re all doing here.  Here’s a little tidbit:

1. What is your goal weight?

2. What will your life be like when you accomplish this goal? (be very descriptive…i.e. will you be wearing all the clothes you’ve been wanting to wear but couldn’t? Will you be healthier and more active? Will your cholesteral levels go down (I know mine need to…..))

3. How will you feel when you accomplish this goal? (again, be very descriptive about your internal feelings)

4. Break your goal weight into a realistic time period to lose it. Most people say it is reasonable to lose a pound a week with not a lot of drastic changes. Post your monthly and quarterly goals on your calender.

5. What are 5 action steps you are willing to commit to to help you achieve your goal? Make sure each step is s.m.a.r.t. (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely).

And lastly, write all of this stuff down somewhere where you can see it everyday and stay focused on the end result. Reward yourself for the small milestones. Review your plan on a regular basis and make changes when you don’t see the desired results.

Hope it helps. Good Luck!

Heart Monitor is AWESOME!

So I bought a heart monitor yesterday. My spin instructor says it’s worth the investment because you always know which “zone” you’re working out in. I used it today and I get it. I went for a bike ride, and I’m riding along thinking “cool, I’m exercising” but then I checked my heart monitor. My heart was not showing much more of an increase than me just walking around the house picking up toys off the floor. I exerted myself more and more until I got to the “fitness zone” which is where I need to be to lose weight. The fitness zone and the zone where I normally exercise are two different things. I’ve been “working out” all this time - for the last 2 years - without exercising effectively.

For those of you who are wondering what a heart monitor is - I got one at my local Sports Authority for less than $40. It looks like a watch and you just put your finger on a button and it measures your heart rate. I’m so excited to take it with me on a daily basis to see how I can squeeze some “fitness zone” time into my day!

Hope you all had a great New Years Day! USC won the Rose Bowl so my family was very happy. I didn’t drink anything but I did have some queso dip and chips. Hopefully that won’t bite me in the a$$ later. :)
